How does the migration of my WordPress site work?

In five steps: you choose a plan, send us access to your current site, we copy the files and database to your new hosting, we check the site, then your domain name is pointed at our servers. Your current site stays online until the very last moment.

  1. Choose your plan

Order Starter, Premium or Boost. Your hosting space is created when the service is activated.

    Step 1
  2. Send us your request

Through the contact form (subject “Technical support”): site address, current host and the kind of access you have, without any password. We get back to you with an estimated timeline and a secure way to share the logins.

    Step 2
  3. We copy your site

Files, database, plugins, themes and media are moved to your LiteSpeed hosting, with a free SSL certificate.

    Step 3
  4. We check it

Pages, forms, admin login, store if you have one: we test the copied site before anything is switched.

    Step 4
  5. Domain switch

Your domain’s DNS or name servers are pointed at Hosterwise. Propagation can take up to 48 hours; meanwhile, the old site keeps answering.

    Step 5

What do you need to migrate your site?

Just one of the following: your current hosting control panel (cPanel, Plesk…), FTP/SFTP access plus database access, or a full backup of the site. You also need to be able to change your domain’s DNS, or let us guide you through it.

What we will need

  • The address of the site to move and the name of your current host
  • Access to the current hosting (panel, or FTP/SFTP and database) or a full backup (files and database)
  • A WordPress administrator account (ideally created just for this)
  • Your domain registrar, if you did not buy the domain from us

Our security tips

  • Create temporary logins for the migration instead of sharing your usual passwords
  • Change or delete those logins once the migration is done
  • Don’t cancel your old hosting until you have approved the site at Hosterwise
  • If your e-mail addresses are hosted with your current provider, tell us: the DNS switch affects them too

Question

How long does a WordPress migration take?

It mostly depends on the size of the site (media, database) and how quickly the old host can be accessed. We give you an estimate as soon as we have reviewed your request. Once the domain points to our servers, DNS propagation can take up to 48 hours, with no downtime for your visitors.

For a WooCommerce store, plan the switch for a quiet moment: orders placed on the old server during DNS propagation need to be carried over. We agree on this with you before the switch.

What should I do after the migration?

Check your site at its usual address, enable the LiteSpeed Cache plugin to use the server cache, then cancel your old hosting once everything is approved. Keep a backup of the old site for a few weeks.

  • Check key pages, forms and, if relevant, a test order on your store.
  • Install or enable LiteSpeed Cache and disable other page-caching plugins.
  • Make sure the site loads over HTTPS with the free SSL certificate.
  • Keep a backup of the old site before cancelling your previous hosting.

FAQ

Migration FAQ

Another question? Talk to an expert

Is the migration really free?

Yes. Having our team migrate your WordPress site is included in the Starter, Premium and Boost plans at no extra cost. You only pay for your hosting subscription, which is covered by the 30-day money-back guarantee.

Will my site go down during the migration?

No. We copy your site without touching the original, which stays online with your current host. The switch is made by pointing your domain to our servers; during DNS propagation, up to 48 hours, visitors reach one server or the other, with the same content.

Do I have to transfer my domain to you?

No. Your domain can stay with its current registrar: you only change its DNS records or name servers to point it at Hosterwise. We tell you the exact values to enter.

Can you migrate a site that isn’t built with WordPress?

Our free migration service is designed for WordPress sites, WooCommerce stores included. For another kind of site, describe it to us through the contact form: we will tell you honestly whether our hosting suits it.

What if I change my mind after the migration?

Hosting comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Since the migration never deletes your old site, you can go back as long as you haven’t cancelled your previous hosting.

How do I request the migration?

After your order, write to us through the contact form and pick the “Technical support” subject. Give us the site address, your current host and the kind of access you have, without any password: we then explain how to share the logins securely.
