Question

Who can register a .ch domain name?

According to SWITCH, you can register a .ch without being Swiss and without living in Switzerland, through an accredited registrar. If a Swiss authority asks, however, a holder without a valid Swiss correspondence address must designate one within 30 days, or the domain is revoked.

What are the naming rules for .ch?

SWITCH’s general terms provide that a .ch name has 3 to 63 characters. A hyphen cannot be the first or last character, nor occupy both the 3rd and 4th positions. Names with umlauts and other diacritics are accepted.

  • For an accented name: at least 3 characters, at most 63 in its encoded (ACE) form
  • The names of Swiss municipalities are reserved for the municipality concerned
  • Registration for an indefinite period at the registry, until deletion or transfer

Question

What does the WHOIS of a .ch name show?

Since 1 January 2021, SWITCH no longer publishes the personal data of .ch holders: the public lookup only shows the registrar and technical information. Holder data is only released on a justified request. SWITCH also runs an RDAP service (rdap.nic.ch).

Question

How do you transfer a .ch domain name?

To change registrar you need a transfer code (Auth-Code), supplied by your current provider, which you give to the new one. Since 2021 every .ch is managed by a registrar, so that is where you request the code.

Which projects is .ch best for?

.ch is the extension Swiss internet users expect, in French- and German-speaking Switzerland alike. It suits businesses selling in Switzerland and brands active on both sides of the border, alongside a .fr or .com.

  • Swiss customers

Swiss internet users trust a .ch address more readily.

  • Cross-border business

Cross-border workers, e-commerce: add a .ch to your main domain.

  • Brand protection

Stop anyone else using your name in Switzerland.
