Under the regulations published by Red.es, any individual or legal entity with interests in or links to Spain is entitled to a .es: a foreign business selling in Spain qualifies. The .gob.es and .edu.es subdomains are reserved for public bodies and educational institutions.
A .es name has 3 to 63 characters: the letters a to z, digits and hyphens, case-insensitive. A hyphen cannot be the first or last character, and a name cannot start with “xn--”. Multilingual characters have been accepted since 2007.

The .es registration terms provide for the publication in WHOIS of individuals’ first and last names, organisations’ trading names and, in every case, the e-mail address, under Spanish Law 14/2000. It is one of the least privacy-friendly extensions.

Since 20 November 2024, an authorisation code (AuthCode) is mandatory to change registrar: 6 to 16 alphanumeric characters, valid for 10 days, supplied by the current provider. The request sent by the new registrar must then be approved by the administrative contact.
